The statistical budgeting system is conceived to take maximum advantage of current computing possibilities to carry out a rigorous control of costs and returns, particularly for low-cost houses constructed with local materials.

In this particular example the system has been developed to evaluate constructive systems in wattle and daub and bamboo.

The prices have been taken from the project "Programa de vivienda para el sur de Machala" developed by the author for a project of 250 houses in Ecuador in 1993.

The software is based on Microsoft EXCEL ® versions 4.0 and 5.0 for Macintosh or for IBM ® compatible systems.

The system is based on several linked spreadsheets comprising one input workbook and three operative workbooks:

Input Spreadsheet
This has the general information valid for the whole package such as: titles, dollar rate, construction items, type of building etc. This information is linked with the entire software.

Components Workbook
This gathers the different prefabricated components spreadsheets including materials, and labour. The information produced in these sheets is automatically sent to the main workbook.

Main Workbook
This is the spreadsheets’s budgeting system with eleven interlinked sheets in a standardised format. It receives information from the Inputs and Components Workbooks.

Statistical Workbook
This is the last component in the software. It analyses data from the precedent workbooks, producing six statistical graphs, facilitating evaluation and selection.
